What is a Partial Denture?
A Partial Denture or “removable bridge” replaces one or more missing teeth. It uses the remaining teeth you do have in your mouth to attach to these teeth, and then it helps the partial denture hold better and not feel loose. Unlike a fixed bridge, a partial is removable. A partial denture can prevent other teeth from shifting, preserving your remaining teeth.
There are two types of partial dentures we make at Dr. Stuart Curry’s Dental Office. The first is the traditional, metal base partial denture. With these partial dentures, the base is made of a metal alloy. They are very durable and have the ability to have future teeth added to them if the patient were to lose another tooth in the future.
The other type of partial denture is called a Valplast Partial Denture. These partial dentures have a pink rubber base material, and have the advantage of being much lighter and more comfortable than the traditional metal type of partial denture.
What is a Complete Denture?
A Complete Denture is used in the patient’s mouth after all the original teeth have been lost or extracted, and the gum tissue has completely healed. Healing takes anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, depending upon the patient.
In some cases, an Immediate Complete Denture will be given and delivered to the patient the day the extractions take place, so that the patient does not have to go without his or her teeth. This immediate form of complete denture may require some follow up adjustment appointments in order for the denture to fit better to your mouth, mainly because the gums will change and move after teeth are extracted.
